Seeds Scattered On Opening Day Of PSA World Champs Asian Qualifying
The PSA World Championships Asian Qualifying event got underway in dramatic style earlier today, with seven seeds stunned on the opening day of action at the Hong Kong Football Club.
In the men’s event, Malaysia’s Mohammad Syafiq Kamal produced one of the performances of the day to defeat No.3 seed Matthew Lai in straight games, while Hong Kong’s Shing Fung Lam stunned No.4 seed Ameeshenraj Chandaran by an 11-8, 8-11, 11-9, 11-3 scoreline.
The other seed to fall in the men’s draw was former World Junior Champion and tournament No.7 seed Hamza Khan, who lost out to Hong Kong’s Ming Hong Tang 17-15, 11-13, 11-7, 11-5.
Malaysian top seed Sanjay Jeeva, however, wasn’t to be denied a spot in the quarter-finals, claiming a routine three-game win over Korea’s Jeongmin Ryu, with Pakistani No.2 seed Muhammad Asim Khan also advancing by the same scoreline after beating Japan’s Naoki Hayashi.
