Day TWO, Round TWO

Down to the Last Sixteens in Chicago

The second day of the World Champs again saw action across three Chicago venues as the men’s and women’s draws were reduced to the last sixteens.

The women’s matches went almost entirely to seeding as the top fifteen seeds booked their places on the glass court at Union station over the next two days, the only casualty being 16th seed Salma Hany who fell in four games to France’s US-based Melissa Alves.

Highlights included a five game escape by fourth seed Joelle King, a storming finish from Annie Au, Nicol David‘s revenge win over Millie Tomlinson and a comeback win for Amanda Sobhy in her all-American battle with Olivia Blatchford Clyne.

In the men’s matches all but one of yesterday’s giantkillers were beaten as the seeds reasserted – twelve of the seeds joined by Leo Au, Borja Golan, Joel Makin and Mazen Hesham in round three.

Top seed and defending champion Mohamed ElShorbagy was given a stern test by Cesar Salazar, while Ryan Cuskelly and Mohamed Aboulghar both needed five games to confirm their spots.

From tomorrow we’re down to one court, so well have fuller reports …
