WC Qualifying Pan America RD1: Costales Defeats No.2 Seed For Quarter Final Berth

World No.141 David Costales produced the biggest shock on day one of the Pan America World Championships World Qualifying event after defeating World No.85 Salah Eltorgman.

Costales drew first blood with an 11-5 success before Eltorgman, who was the No.2 seed for the event, restored parity before Costales of Ecuador won the third and fourth games 11-4, 11-9 to reach the quarter finals.

He will be joined by the top seed Spencer Lovejoy in the last eight following his straight games success over Andres Herrera.

Meanwhile Sebastian Salazar overturned a 2-1 deficit to knock out No.4 seed Matias Knudsen with a 3-2 win in 70 minutes.

In the women’s competition, top seeds Caroline Fouts and Danielle Ray progressed to the last eight emphatically.

Fouts downed her American compatriot Arisha Khan 3-0 while Canadian Ray defeated her fellow countrywoman Sara Khan by the same scoreline in just 14 minutes.

Elsewhere, Canada’s Iman Shaheen fought back from 2-1 down to overcome Darlyn Sandoval 3-2 to secure her place in the last eight.

The quarter finals will take place today (Friday April 19) at 12:00 (GMT-4) at the Play Squash Academy, Columbia, Maryland, USA, with all matches played on the glass court.
