Battle for World No.1

The PSA World Championships has now reached the quarter final stages and with both Mostafa Asal and Ali Farag both still in the draw, another opportunity for the World No.1 spot to change hands in the men’s rankings has presented itself.

Mostafa Asal recently re-ascended to the summit of the rankings for the first time since April 2023 after claiming the Optasia Championships title, narrowly overtaking compatriot Ali Farag with the points earned from his Gold-level title success.

However, both Asal and Farag remain extremely close in the current world rankings, with Asal sitting on an average of 2,163 points and Farag on 2,105 as of the 12/5/25 rankings.

With the pair hard to split in the world rankings, the World Championships is not only a chance to make history but will prove crucial to who can end the season at the top of the tree.

Here Are The Permutations For Both Players:

  • If Farag wins the World Championships, he will overtake Asal and become the new World No.1 – regardless of how far Asal goes.
  • Asal needs to better Farag’s result to remain at World No.1.
  • Farag will reclaim the World No.1 spot if he matches or betters the result of Asal.

The World No.1 and World No.2 are unsurprisingly on opposite sides of the draw in the World Champs and after the pair have safely navigated to the final eight, the competition gets tougher.

Asal will take on former World No.1 and World Champion Karim Abdel Gawad in his quarter final before a potential semi-final clash with Paul Coll or Mohamed Elshorbagy.

Meanwhile, Farag has defeated Bernat Jaume and Veer Chotrani in his first two matches this week. He has benefited from a bye in round three after Leonel Cardenas retired injured from a head injury. Farag will now take on the experienced Tarek Momen in the quarter finals and is set to face defending champion Diego Elias in the semi-finals.

The top-half quarter finals get underway at 17:30 (GMT-5) later today with all four matches available to watch live on SQUASHTV.
