Semi-Finals : Upsets aplenty as the finalists are decided

A long and dramatic semi-finals night in Cairo saw three upset results as Nour El Sherbini, Nouran Gohar, Diego Elias and Mostafa Asal win through to the World Championship finals.

The first match of the night was the only one to go to seeding as seven-time champion Nour El Sherbini was taken to five games before beating USA’s eighth seed Olivia Weaver. Men’s defending champion Ali Farag was then beaten in four games as Diego Elias became the first South American to reach the world champs final.

In the only all-Egyptian matchup of the night Nouran Gohar got the better of second seed Hania El Hammamy to reach a fourth successive World Champs final, and in the last match of the day Mostafa Asal held off  Paul Coll’s fightback from two games down to reach his first final.
